Why are our instagram feeds filled with images of celebrities freezing themselves? No, they aren't attempting to cryogenically time-travel to the future. Its all part of a new wellness trend that top athletes have been benefiting from for years. Cryotherapy

Whole body cryotherapy is known for utilising your body's built-in emergency survival mode to deliver a wide range of health benefitsLondonCryo's liquid nitrogen filled cabin, located 5 minutes from London's Liverpool Street station, sinks to temperatures of minus 140, forcing the blood to rush to the body's core in order to protect and replenish the most important internal organs with oxygen, nutrients and enzymes. This can encourage organ regeneration, expel toxins and renew cells.

But how does it feel?

Picture cold clouds of liquid nitrogen carefully caressing your body into a new wave of energy, and you are close to imagining what a 3 minute Cryotherapy treatment feels like.

Initially nervous, I was surprised how bearable sub zero temperatures can be. Turning 90 degrees every 30 seconds in the cabin, in order to maximise full body exposure, definitely helps to break up the time which seems to fly by in an instant.

Once you emerge from the chamber after the final freezing 30 seconds, you may experience a euphoric head rush and slight dizzyness as your body readjusts to its normal temperature. For me, this manifested in a fit of laughter and the inability to articulate myself properly, as my body and mind navigated a state of, somewhat pleasurable, shock.

Post-Cryo is one of the best times to work out, as it can increase your capacity for exercise and boosts the rate at which you burn calories. Cryotherapy is also often used by athletes post-work out to help with DOMS and speed up muscle recovery.

Clients report a softening and rejuvenation of the skin, increased energy levels and improved sleep quality. Moreover your mental health is also addressed; lowered cortisol levels means an enhanced ability to deal with stress and therefore a calmer mind and body. I definitely found that, during the days following the treatment, I was significantly more sharp-minded, energetic, productive and happy!

Cryotherapy has been championed by the likes of Mo Farah and Cristiano Ronaldo for its muscle recovery benefits for years. Olympians Perrie Shakes Drayton and Sarah Lindsey are often seen down LondonCryo to supplement their training, while celebrities Professor Green and Calum Best are often spotted hitting the cold chambers to amp up their body's resilience against their busy lifestyles.

With a large array of physical and mental health benefits, Cryo is here to stay. We recommend booking a session ahead of an especially important meeting or strenuous work week. But for the  greatest health benefits, consider adding a 3 minute Cryotherapy session to your weekly wellness regime.

A single session at LondonCryo costs £90 and weekly sessions are available for £199 per month.
