Bloomsbury Set Afternoon Tea at Charlotte Street Hotel

Bloomsbury Set Afternoon Tea at Charlotte Street Hotel

Celebrating the hotel’s past neighbours and pioneering artistic group, The Bloomsbury Set, Charlotte Street Hotel has launched their new Afternoon Tea running from the 8th January  - 9th February, 3rd April – 18th May and 6th August – 16th September!

The Bloomsbury Set Afternoon Tea, is a brand new experience inspired by the experimental and creative ideals of its past neighbours the Bloomsbury Set, a pioneering group of early twentieth century writers, artists and intellectuals and of course the beautiful original art work that fills the Charlotte Street Hotel.

The menu is a mix of old recipes and favourites consumed by its famous members, Virginia Woolf and Duncan Grant as documented in ‘The Bloomsbury Cookbook – Recipes for Life, Love and Art’ by Jans Ondaantje Rolls. Head Chef Bradd Johns worked through theseauthentic recipes* to create a menu worthy of the influential group, to include many of their much-loved tea time treats. From Eccles Cakes which were known to be a Virginia Woolf favourite (the perfect sustenance whilst writing) and Blackberry Mousse Opera Cake, a recipe which was found in writer, Frances Partridge’s personal collection of papers, to a Crab Bloody Mary Melba Toast inspired by Duncan Grant’s love for the drink.

Inspired by the work of the Bloomsbury Set, owner and Design Director Kit Kemp has continued to pay homage throughout Charlotte Street Hotel, since it opened in 2000, with a collection of original and commissioned work, making the hotel the perfect setting for Bloomsbury-esque debate and discussion. The afternoon tea can be taken in the hotel’s Drawing Room or Library surrounded by original paintings by Vanessa Bell, Roger Fry, Duncan Grant and Nina Hamnett, or in Oscar’s Bar and Restaurant which features a hand-painted mural by Alexander Hollweg, inspired by the work of Duncan Grant.

For those looking to add a tipple to their tea, Charlotte Street Hotel has also been working with local micro-distillery, Bloomsbury, to create an entirely unique gin, which can be served as an Oscar Gimlet made with homemade ginger, thyme and lime cordial.
