Alchemy & Artistry
This October respected art company Winsor & Newton, founded in 1832 by scientist William Winsor and painter Henry Newton, are launching five uniquely designed, specially curated sets of materials including ink, water colour, acrylic paint, mediums and metallic markers.
These beautifully designed keepsake boxes make thoughtful gifts for a loved ones with an artistic disposition. Likewise, they make great personal kits to take on one's travels. We took the 'Cotman Postcard Collection' out with us on a beautiful Summer's picnic during our stay in Florence, Italy. It provided amusement and peaceful contemplation, and best of all I got to create miniature watercolours documenting my surroundings to send back home to friends in England.
The Cotman Postcard Collection (£26.75) has, emblazoned on the box, a winged lion or griffin grasping a globe and the words 'ARS PROBAT ARTIFICEM' which translated from Latin means 'Art is the test of the artisan' as well as 'SECURUS JUDICAT' which comes from the Latin phrase 'Securus Judicat Orbis Terrarum' meaning 'The secure judgement of the whole world' which comes from the text of Catholic bishop and theologian St Augustine. Interestingly, the winged lion or griffin has been part of Winsor & Newton's logo and maker's mark since 1881, with these Latin mottos also a part of their narrative for many years.
The Cotman Postcard Collection comes with a pot of Black Indian drawing ink featuring the D.A.D.A silver award for packaging design by Michael Peters OBE in 1973, and three 8ml tubes of Series 1 watercolour paints in primary colours 'Permanent Rose', 'Ultramarine' and 'Lemon Yellow Hue'. Together these three watercolours can be mixed to produce many different, experimental colours in the palette provided. You will also find a standard size 2 Cotman brush alongside a wonderful brush pen which can be filled with water to apply colour washes to the 6 blank postcards made from Winsor & Newton's quality watercolour paper.
The new gift range is built upon Winsor & Newton’s extensive knowledge, passion and artistic understanding to curate and has been designed to ignite artistic journeys that will excite the mind and engage the senses with each set containing a unique collection of high-performance art materials.
